Founded by martial arts master and Taoist yoga teacher Paulie Zink in the 1970s, Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time, upto five minutes or more per yoga pose (asana) for more advanced practitioners. Apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body, that is the tendons, fascia, and ligaments, yin yoga asanas aim to increase circulation in the joints and improve overall flexibility. As a more meditative approach to yoga, yin yoga aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence, and bringing to light an interconnecting quality. Yin Yoga is based on the Taoist principles of yin yang (陰陽), yin (陰) loosely correlates to the Sanskrit for Shakti (शक्ति) and yang (陽) for Shiva (शिव), and focuses on restorative asanas by conserving yin energy.
