An asana is a yoga body position in which a practitioner sits. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, asana is referred to as a position that is both firm and relaxed. It literally means to sit down, and was originally simply a seated body position. Asana are also performed as physical exercise where they are often referred to as “yoga postures” or “yoga pose”. Asana promote health in the body, although in differing ways in comparison to most other physical exercise, placing the physical body in positions that also cultivate body- and breath-awareness, relaxation and concentration.
